5 Common Causes of Chronic Shoulder Pain

The shoulder joint is one of the most mobile joints in the body, and this mobility makes it more susceptible to problems. In many cases, shoulder pain is a transient issue that resolves on its own with some rest and self-care. But sometimes shoulder pain can persist and turn into a chronic issue that greatly impacts daily life.

At aCELLerated Interventional Orthopedics, Dr. Brian Rich specializes in providing spine and pain management for a full range of musculoskeletal issues, including chronic shoulder pain

If you h ave a shoulder issue, Dr. Rich works to find an effective solution to help you regain shoulder mobility and comfort. Shoulder pain can have various causes. Here are five of the most common underlying issues that can lead to chronic shoulder pain.

Rotator cuff injuries

The rotator cuff is composed of a group of muscles and tendons that are key in stabilizing the shoulder joint. Each component plays a specific role in enabling the shoulder to move smoothly and freely. Repetitive overhead movements, heavy lifting, or trauma to the shoulder are common factors behind rotator cuff injuries.

If your rotator cuff is damaged, you may experience pain, weakness, and limited range of motion. If left untreated, rotator cuff injuries can worsen over time, leading to chronic pain and functional limitations. Don’t ignore your discomfort and continue to push through chronic shoulder pain. The sooner you have your shoulder evaluated and treated, the better.

Osteoarthritis

Over 53 million adults have some form of arthritis, with osteoarthritis (OA) being the most common. The chances of developing OA goes up with age. It’s more likely to affect people over the age of 50.

Osteoarthritis can affect various joints in the body. While knee and hip osteoarthritis are more common, OA can also affect the shoulder. Over time the cartilage slowly breaks down, causing significant joint damage that may make it difficult to perform everyday tasks. Dr. Rich uses interventional treatments that reduce pain and improve shoulder function in patients with shoulder OA.

Frozen shoulder

Adhesive capsulitis, aka frozen shoulder, is characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It develops when the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder thickens and tightens, restricting movement.

Frozen shoulder often progresses through three stages: freezing, frozen, and thawing. It can take months or even years to resolve fully. Treatment typically involves physical therapy, pain management, and minimally invasive procedures to restore mobility and alleviate discomfort.

Bursitis

Small fluid-filled sacs in the shoulder called bursa can sometimes become irritated and chronically inflamed. Repetitive movements or prolonged pressure on the joint are the most common reasons bursitis develops.

Pain, swelling, and tenderness are common in patients with bursitis. Most cases of bursitis are short-lived, but if pain persists, it’s a sign that you need to have your shoulder evaluated. Treatment options include rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and targeted injections to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Tendonitis

There are four main tendons in the shoulder that assist with movement and stability. If any of these tendons becomes chronically inflamed (tendonitis), you may experience persistent shoulder pain.

Athletes and older adults are more susceptible to sudden shoulder injuries as well as shoulder tendonitis from repetitive shoulder movements. Interventional approaches, such as ultrasound-guided injections and regenerative therapies, can help manage pain and promote healing.
